General Caregiver Information

Client Diagnosis

Home Care Support Services maintains printed information on various diseases and conditions which affect our clients. Such information includes Alzheimer's, Diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, stroke, seizure disorder to name a few.

These resources are available to our office based staff and are shared with our Attendant Care Workers (ACWs) at the time they are placed with specific clients.

Educational material and techniques for the specific client are provided and reviewed by the nurse at the beginning of a regular assignment. These materials can be obtained at any time by dropping by our offices or by requesting them from the ACW's nurse supervisor or LPN monitor.

Training: Techniques and Equipment

ACWs attend a 12 hour training course to teach how to use a Hoyer lift, walkers, transfer boards, and gait belts. If an ACW wants to refresh or practice these skills there is information with diagrams to let them do so. There are also videos available in the training center, or hands on practice in the training center can be scheduled.

Our files contain other information sources that allow Home Care Support Services ACWs to read about correct client transfer - bed to chair, chair to wheelchair, chair to walker, etc. Additionally, there is material that will allow ACWs to learn how to bathe clients, to help lift them to a standing position, to feed clients, and to perform range of motion with clients who have a prescription from their physician.

Caring For Self

As anyone who has cared for a sick child or other relative, even briefly, knows, caregiving can take a lot out of the person. We encourage our ACWs to take care of themselves, too. We maintain resources that explain the role good nutrition plays in keeping the mind/body connection fit, of relieving stress, of getting exercise, and doing something special for oneself every now and then.
